Radical extremism is rising in Israel, trampling civil liberties and human rights in the name of "national security". The foreign minister, elected on an openly racist platform, is pushing dark new laws that revoke citizenship for anyone who doesn't swear a loyalty oath, peaceful protesters are met with police violence, and people (mainly Palestinians) are jailed without charge. The media is under pressure, with some commentators alarmed at what they see as creeping fascism. (see sources below)
Many brave Israelis, including thousands of Avaaz members, are fighting for their democracy and for the rights of Jews and Palestinians, including an end to the blockade and the occupation of Palestine. Israelis could help break the Gaza blockade if they joined the next flotilla, but they are facing massive intimidation by the government. This could be the peace movement's darkest hour -- let's send hope. Click below to donate:
Specifically, donations will go to:
- Support for Israelis to join the next aid flotilla in significant numbers -- this could be a game-changer in the effort to break the Gaza blockade.
- Legal aid for Israelis and Palestinians who are constantly jailed for non-violent action.
- Expenses for participants in non-violent action, including around settlement building on Palestinian land in Jerusalem and media efforts around these actions.
- Infrastructure and training to build the peace movement in Israel over the long term, including online organizing.
Avaaz is a deeply pro-Israeli, pro-Palestinian, pro-peace community. Over 90% of our members support the goal of a two-state solution with safe and secure homes for both peoples. Today, the greatest threat to that goal, and to Israeli safety and security, is now its own radical right wing. That wing is driving an escalation of the conflict that makes peace impossible, and will only jeopardize Israel in the long run. Today, the causes of the Israelis and the Palestinians are one -- both want peace, security, and home to call their own, and that is the cause that Avaaz members all over the world stand with. Our community's members in Israel and Palestine are asking for our help to bravely fight for the cause we all believe in. Let's answer their call:
